Transformative Mediation

Overview

Mediation training and practice at the San Quentin Rehabilitation Center — modeling de-escalation and accountability to help resolve conflict and reduce violence.

Transformative Mediation is an in-custody program at the San Quentin Rehabilitation Center (SQRC) where residents build advanced skills to help resolve conflict without escalating to violence. Participants complete 100+ hours of training in mediation and restorative conflict resolution, along with core readiness skills like reflective listening, de-escalation, boundaries, and understanding impact. Graduates then apply these skills in real situations inside the institution — strengthening safety and dignity for both residents and staff, and building competencies that can carry forward after release.

Mediation is a structured process where a trained neutral helps people in conflict communicate, understand impact, and work toward practical agreements.

What we offer

  • 100+ hours of structured training in mediation and restorative conflict resolution (plus communication and readiness skills)
  • Ongoing mentoring and practice for trained resident mediators and facilitators
  • Structured conflict resolution services that model de-escalation, accountability, and repair inside SQRC
  • Cohort-based growth (three cohorts graduated to date), with a Spanish-speaking cohort planned next (your update)
  • Professional pathway alignment, including adding a 40-hour mediation certification training through the Congress of Neutrals (your update)

Who is it for?

Transformative Mediation serves incarcerated residents who want to build high-level conflict-resolution skills and contribute to a safer institutional climate. The program also supports staff and institutional partners who want credible, structured tools to address conflict and reduce escalation. We also engage ADR organizations and practitioners and funders who want to strengthen safety, accountability, and credible mediation pathways in custody and beyond.

Outcomes

  • Stronger de-escalation and structured conflict resolution in custody
  • Greater accountability and repair in high-conflict situations
  • Reduced likelihood of escalation to violence in appropriate conflicts
  • A growing cohort of trained peer mediators — “Ambassadors of Peace” — who can model respectful conflict resolution inside and beyond custody
  • Skills and momentum that support reintegration and continued practice after release

When Restorative Approaches Work Best

Transformative Mediation works best when people want a structured process to resolve conflict and are willing to participate respectfully. We prepare participants to assess readiness and fit. This program supports safety and accountability inside SQRC and does not replace required safety responses or official disciplinary procedures.

Related Work

We also support restorative processes in post-conviction contexts, including cases of serious harm, where participation and safety planning make a restorative process appropriate.

Bridging Worlds: A Shared Journey in Mediation

Transformative Mediation is also part of a broader effort to bridge in-custody mediation practice with the wider professional mediation field. Through convenings like Bridging Worlds: A Shared Journey in Mediation, we bring together trained inside mediators and outside practitioners for shared learning, skill-building, and workforce pathway development — grounded in the reality that mediation inside custody is both technically demanding and deeply human.

ADR organizations and practitioners can support Transformative Mediation through mentorship, skills exchange, training support, and pathway alignment work that helps connect in-custody practice to recognized professional standards.

Funders can help sustain training, materials, program coordination, and reintegration bridge pathways that carry skills forward after release.
